Summertime is the perfect season to slow down, breathe, think, rest. Below are some of the voices that will be companions to me over the next several months as I pray, think, and recreate. I hope that maybe some of them will be helpful to you too, as you prepare to embark on the road trip, visit friends, recalibrate your schedule, or head “down the shore”…
Seeking God’s Face -This is a user-friendly daily prayerbook that combines Psalm-praying, Scripture reading, and daily prayers shaped by the Reformed Christian theological tradition of which our church is a part, all in an easy-to-use format- a perfect companion for your travels this summer!
Daily Prayer App - This is one of my favorite daily prayer mobile apps; it’s a user-friendly-formatted electronic version of the Church of England’s rhythm of prayers and Scripture readings.
Wholeheartedness - Chuck DeGroat Chuck has been a close friend to me and to Liberti for several years, and we had him lead a weekend seminar based on the material for this book this past spring. He’s a professor, pastor, and therapist, and wisely brings all three of those vocations to bear in this book on dealing with your business, exhaustion, and fragmentation, and finding wholeness in Christ.
You Are What You Love - James K.A. Smith. Liberti hosted a lecture with Jamie this past spring on the material for this book, which you can check out here. Smith is a philosopher and cultural critic whose newest book explores the spiritual power of habit and the way in which Christian practices shape our lives.
FOOD & FICTION
Something To Food About - Questlove. If you’ve been around Liberti for a bit, or know me, you know I love food and art, and my family tries to create time and space to enjoy both in the summer. This new book by native Philadelphian and Roots bandleader Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is a fascinating series of conversations between him and leading chefs in various cities about the intersection of food, art, and creativity.
The Power and The Glory - Graham Greene. British novelist Graham Greene’s masterpiece, which tells the story of an unnamed “whiskey priest” on the run for his life southern Mexico, is a powerful narrative of brokenness, dignity, and grace.
Babylon Revisited & Other Stories - F. Scott Fitzgerald. These ten pieces of short fiction represent one of America’s greatest 20th-century writers at the height of his creative powers, and are powerful pictures of desire, humanity, greed, and hope.
