Fourth Week of Advent: Dec 21 - 27

Personal Reflection - Jen Wise

It was one of those days. Ok, it was more than a day — let’s say a series of days. Everything felt wrong, stressful, and exhausting – and there was no end in sight. I had dipped into depression. I’d come up for air. I dipped again. Everything felt so hopeless.

I begged God for a sign — for a change — for relief. But it seemed that God had been answering my prayers in such a way that I wasn’t sure he was answering them at all. He felt silent and far away.

But then: a string of funny texts from a friend, and a lovely dinner party, and chatting on the sidewalk with a neighbor. And meeting up for coffee to both laugh and cry, a night out on the town, an all-morning brunch, and a goofy ’90s night. It was through these things that God gave me relief. It was through these people, these sweet friends, these little walking light-bearers, that my soul was lightened, my head lifted, and my heart made full.

Because love is healing, and love puts things right. Love restores us. Love makes us whole. And this is the carol-booming, bubbly-popping, tree-trimming good news of Christmas: the power of perfect love.

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.” (John 3:16-17 MSG)

Because of his love, we are offered new life. Because of his love, we are made healed and whole. Because of his love, we are promised that our world will be made right again.

As we walk through Advent and Christmas, and into the New Year, let’s carry armfuls of love like a giant bouquet. And let’s pass it out generously as we join in God’s mission to set the world right again.
