It is the fellowship of the Cross to experience the burden of another… To bear the burden of the other person means involvement with the created reality of the other, to accept and affirm it, and, in bearing with it, to break through to the point where we take joy in it.

—Dietrich Bonhoeffer, from Life Together

“I think we better take her in. It’ll be all over the county in two hours. How do you know what she is? How’d she get here? What happened to her? Adam, you’re taking an awful chance… I think you’re making a mistake. I’ll go, but I tell you we’ll suffer for it.”

“I’ll do the suffering,” said Adam.

—John Steinbeck, from East of Eden

Opening Sentences

Leader:     Our help is in the name of the Lord,
                 who made heaven and earth.

—Psalm 124:8

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Prayer of Invocation

Psalm 126

Our mouths, they were filled, filled with laughter.
Our tongues, they were loosed, loosed with joy.
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

Although we are weeping,
Lord, help us keep sowing
The seeds of Your Kingdom
For the day You will reap them!
Your sheaves we will carry;
Lord, please do not tarry!
All those who sow weeping
Will go out with songs of joy!

The nations will say “He has done great things!”
The nations will sing songs of joy.
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

Chorus (2x)

Music & lyrics by Isaac Wardell, 2012.

You’re Beautiful

I see Your face in every sunrise
The colors of the morning are inside Your eyes
The world awakens in the light of the day
I look up to the sky and say You're beautiful

I see Your power in the moonlit night
Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright
We are amazed in the light of the stars
It's all proclaiming who you are You're beautiful

I see you there hanging on a tree
You bled and then you died and then you rose again for me
Now you are sitting on Your heavenly throne
Soon we will be coming home You're beautiful

When we arrive at eternity's shore
Where death is just a memory and tears are no more
We'll enter in as the wedding bells ring
Your bride will come together and we'll sing You're beautiful

Presentation and Vows

Christopher John Soldano

Minister:      Parents, you stand before us having brought your child to receive the sacrament of baptism. I ask you, therefore, before God and Christ’s church to reject evil, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce sin and the power of evil in your life and in the world?
Parents:      We renounce them.

Minister:       Who is your Lord and Savior?
Parents:       Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.

Minister:     Do you promise to instruct Christopher in the truth of God’s word, in the way of salvation through Jesus Christ; to pray for him, to teach him to pray; and to train him in Christ’s way by example, through worship, and in the nurture of the church?
Parents:    We do, and we ask God to help us.

Liberti Church

Minister:      Do you promise to love, encourage, and support this family by teaching the gospel of God’s love, by being an example of Christian faith and character, and by giving the strong         support of God’s family in fellowship, prayer, and service?
People:       We do.

Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ Creed

Minister:      Let us affirm our faith together in the words of the Apostles’ creed:
Do you believe in God the Father?
People:        We believe in God, the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

Minister:      Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
People:       We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,  born of the virgin Mary,  suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven,  and is seated on the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Minister:       Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
People:        We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic1 church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
                    and the life everlasting. Amen.
(1that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places)

The Word of God

Prayer for Illumination & Scripture Reading
Galatians 6:1-2, NRSV

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. 2Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Minister:      This is the Word of the Lord.
People:       Thanks be to God!

The Lord’s Table

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts now!

We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our saving God.

It is right and good, always and everywhere.
To give thanks, to the Lord.

Minister:     Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty to give thanks to you at all times and in all
places, O Lord our Creator… we worship and adore your glorious name, saying:

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might.
The whole earth is full of Your glory,
hosanna in the highest

Minister:   Most righteous God…  Together, we proclaim the mystery of the faith.

Your death, O Christ, we proclaim.
Your rising celebrate!
Your coming Lord we await, to make all things new

Minister:   Send your Holy Spirit upon us… Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Praise to the Father,
praise to the Son,
praise to the Spirit,

Our God the Three in One.

Words of Institution

Minister:    Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
People:      Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Holy Communion

Minister:    The gifts of God for the people of God.

Gluten-free communion wafers are available at the welcome table in the front lobby of the church. Please pick one up prior to coming forward to take communion. Holy Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ.

Prayers For Reflection

If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you are unable to receive Communion, we invite you to meditate on one of the following prayers:

Prayer for those searching for truth… Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of belief… Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of commitment… Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Reckless Love

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me
You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me  (2x)

Oh the overwhelming, never ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights 'till I'm found, leaves the ninety nine
I couldn't earn it  I don't deserve it  Still, You give yourself away
Oh the overwhelming, never ending, reckless love of God

When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me
You have been so, so kind to me

There's no shadow You won't light up,
Mountain You won't climb up, coming after me
There's no wall You won't kick down,
No lie You won't tear down, coming after me
There's no shadow You won't light up,
Mountain You won't climb up, coming after me
There's no wall You won't kick down,
No lie You won't tear down, coming after me

Prayers of the People

Minister:    Lord, in your mercy,
People:      hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

Minister:   Let us pray as our Lord Jesus has taught us:
People:    Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your name,
  your kingdom come,
   your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
                Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
    and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
  now and forever.

Sending into God’s World

By Faith

By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creations grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy  city built by Gods own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him, our souls reward
Till the race is finished and the
Work is done well walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed for Messiah would appear
With the power to break The chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave
By faith the church was called to go

In the power of the spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to
Preach good news
In every corner of the earth

By faith this mountain shall be Moved
And the power of the gospel shall  Prevail
For we Know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name

Minister:    The God of peace,
who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus,
the great shepherd of the sheep,
by the blood of the eternal covenant,
make you complete in everything good
so that you may do God’s will,
working among us that which is pleasing in God’s sight,
through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever!

—from Hebrews 13:20-21

People:      Amen.

Minister:      Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
People:       Thanks be to God.
