Reflections

I believe that encouragement is a medium that provides opportunity for artistic expression. Of all the [Scripture’s] commands, this one calls for careful attention to detail, elegance of style, beauty and sophistication. If done well, encouragement meant as an art can make people feel like they're the most extraordinary people in the world.

Becoming the Church Jesus Longs For

Gathering Before God
July 29, 2018
10th Sunday after Pentecost
Center City Campus

Opening Sentences

Leader:     Our help is in the name of the Lord,
                 who made heaven and earth.

—Psalm 124:8

Wonderful Merciful Savior

Wonderful, Merciful Savior
Precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a
Lamb could rescue the souls of men,
Oh You rescue the souls of men.

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper,
Spirit we long to embrace.
You offer hope when our hearts have
Hopelessly lost the way,
Oh we've hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus:
You are the One that we praise,
You are the One we adore.
You give the healing and grace our
hearts always hunger for,
Oh our hearts always hunger for

Almighty infinite Father
Faithfully loving your own
Here in our weakness you find us
falling before Your Throne,
Oh we're falling before Your throne.

Chorus 2x

O Love Incomprehensible

Chorus:
O Love incomprehensible
That made Thee bleed for me
The Judge of all has suffered death
To set His prisoner free

What pain what soul-oppressing pain
The Great Redeemer bore
While bloody sweat like drops of rain
Distilled from every pore!

Chorus

Arraigned at Pilates shameful bar,
Unparalleled disgrace!
See spotless innocence appear
In guilts detested place

Chorus

The spotless Savior lived for me,
And died upon the mount
The obedience of His life and death,
Is placed to my account!

Chorus

Tis finished! now aloud He cries,
No more the Law requires
And now, amazing sacrifice,
The Lord of Life expires!

Chorus

On Thee alone my hope relies,
Beneath Thy cross I fall
My Lord, my Life, my Sacrifice,
My Savior and my All!

Chorus

Psalm 126

Our mouths, they were filled, filled with laughter.
Our tongues, they were loosed, loosed with joy.
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

CHORUS:
Although we are weeping,
Lord, help us keep sowing
The seeds of Your Kingdom
For the day You will reap them!
Your sheaves we will carry;
Lord, please do not tarry!
All those who sow weeping
Will go out with songs of joy!

The nations will say “He has done great things!”
The nations will sing songs of joy.
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

CHORUS X2

Call to Confession

Leader:    Let us confess our sins to God,
for the Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.

—based on Psalm 145:17-18

Prayer of Confession

People:      God, you uphold those who are falling and raise up all who are bowed down.
                   Therefore we confess our sins-
both things we have done and things we have left undone.

Open your hand to us, embrace us, and forgive us through Jesus Christ,

in whose name we pray- Amen.

Silent Confession & Words of Pardon

Leader:    The Lord is near to all who call on him,
                 to all who call on him in truth;
                 in Christ, we are forgiven!

—Psalm 145:18

Song of Response- Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father
Glory be to the Son
Glory be to the Spirit Three in One
As it was in the beginning
It will be forever
Amen, Amen, Amen

The Word of God

Prayer for Illumination & Scripture Reading
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, NRSV

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief;5for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.

6So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him.

11Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

Minister:      This is the Word of the Lord.
People:       Thanks be to God!

Apostles’ Creed

Minister:    Let us say what we believe.
People:     We believe in God, the Father almighty,
                 creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
                 He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
                 was crucified, died, and was buried;
                 he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
                 He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand
                 of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge
                 the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
                 the holy catholic1
 church,
                 the communion of saints,
                 the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,
                 and the life everlasting.
                 Amen.

(1that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places).

The Lord’s Table

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts now!

We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our saving God.

It is right and good, always and everywhere.
To give thanks, to the Lord.

Minister:     Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty to give thanks to you at all times and in all
places, O Lord our Creator… we worship and adore your glorious name, saying:

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might.
The whole earth is full of Your glory,
hosanna in the highest

(2x)

Minister:   Most righteous God…  Together, we proclaim the mystery of the faith.

Your death, O Christ, we proclaim.
Your rising celebrate!
Your coming Lord we await, to make all things new

(2x)

Minister:   Send your Holy Spirit upon us… Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Praise to the Father,
praise to the Son,
praise to the Spirit,

Our God the Three in One.

PAGE 11

Words of Institution

Minister:    Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
People:      Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Holy Communion

Minister:    The gifts of God for the people of God.

Gluten-free communion wafers are available at the welcome table in the front lobby of the church. Please pick one up prior to coming forward to take communion. Holy Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ.

Prayers For Reflection

If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you are unable to receive Communion, we invite you to meditate on one of the following prayers:

Prayer for those searching for truth… Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of belief… Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of commitment… Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

What Wondrous Love Is This

What wondrous love is this O my soul O my soul
What wondrous love is this O my soul
What wondrous love is this That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul for my soul
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul

When I was sinking down Sinking down sinking down
When I was sinking down sinking down
When I was sinking down Beneath God's righteous frown
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul for my soul
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul

To God and to the Lamb I will sing I will sing
To God and to the Lamb I will sing
To God and to the Lamb Who is the Great I Am
While millions join the theme I will sing I will sing
While millions join the theme I will sing

And when from death I'm free I'll sing on I'll sing on
And when from death I'm free I'll sing on
And when from death I'm free I'll sing and joyful be
And thro' eternity I'll sing on I'll sing on
And thro' eternity I'll sing on

Prayers of the People

Minister:    Lord, in your mercy,
People:      hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

Minister:   Let us pray as our Lord Jesus has taught us:
People:    Our Father in heaven,

  hallowed be your name,

  your kingdom come,

   your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
                Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

    and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

  now and forever.
                Amen.

Sending into God’s World

Offering

Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

Chorus:
On Christ the solid rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil

Chorus

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay

Chorus

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne

Chorus
