Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost
Main Line Campus

Leader:    The Lord be with you.

People:     And also with you.

Leader:     Sing to new song to the Lord,
who has worked wonders, whose right hand
and holy arm have brought salvation.

People:     The Lord has made known salvation;
                    has shown justice to the nations;
has remembered truth and love for the house of Israel.

Leader:     All the ends of the earth have seen
                    the salvation of our God.

People:     Shout to the Lord, all the earth, sing out your joy.

Leader:        Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp,
                   with the sound of music.

People:        With trumpets and the sound of the horn
                   acclaim the King, the Lord.

-based on Psalm 98:1-6

Come thou fount of every blessing
tune my heart to sing thy grace
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming togues above.
Praise His mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by Thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
interposed His precious blood.

O to grace, how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and see it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious and unknown.
Your boundless love unfailing, in grace and mercy shown.
Bright seraphim in endless flight around your glorious throne
They raise their voices day and night in praise to you alone.

Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm.
Surround us with your angels, hold us in your arms.
Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm.
Rise up, oh Lord, and he will flee before our Sovereign God.

Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird;
Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth;
Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe
Sing praises to the living God, who rules them by His word.

Praise Him all you sinners
Sing oh sing you weary
Oh praise Him all you children of God

We lift high His glory
Shown throughout our stories
We praise Him as the children of God

Our Great Redeemer,
Glorious Savior
Your name is higher than the rising sun
Light of the morning
You shine forever
Your name is higher than the rising sun
Your name is higher than the rising sun.

Praise His name forever
Speak it loud and clear now
Oh praise Him all you children of God

Hallelujah name above all
Simply to speak Your name is praise
Hallelujah I will always
Forever we lift your name in praise

Seeing that we have a great High Priest who has entered the inmost heaven, Jesus       the Son of God, let us therefore approach the throne of grace with fullest confidence that we may receive mercy for our failures grace to help in the hour of need. In the strength of this assurance, let us confess our sins to God.

 -based on Hebrews 4:14- 16

People:     Lord, you showed us true humility by becoming one of us, yet too often we practice pride. You freely forgave and healed, yet too often we hold grudges and cause pain. You lived a perfectly holy life, yet too often we do not yearn for righteousness. You prayed that we who             believe in you should be united with each other and you, yet too often we focus on the differences that  separate us from other believers. You were mocked,  whipped and even killed for us, yet too often we deny you. You cried alongside your friends and for the city of Jerusalem, yet too often we rush past the pain of others and are careless about our cities. You loved those who             were weak, despised, or cast out, yet too often we love those who are strong, respected, or popular. Forgive us, Lord, so that we will shine with your glory. Amen.

Leader:  The Lord is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds. The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.

-Psalm 145:13-14

Holy God. Holy and Mighty.
Holy immortal One, have mercy, have mercy on us.
Holy God. Holy and Mighty.
Holy immortal One, have mercy, have mercy

Hebrews 4:1-11

Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest is still open, let us take care that none of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2For indeed the good news came to us just as to them; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.* 3For we who have believed enter that rest, just as God* has said,

‘As in my anger I swore,

“They shall not enter my rest” ’,

though his works were finished at the foundation of the world. 4For in one place it speaks about the seventh day as follows: ‘And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.’ 5And again in this place it says, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ 6Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7again he sets a certain day—‘today’—saying through David much later, in the words already quoted,

‘Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts.’

8For if Joshua had given them rest, God* would not speak later about another day. 9So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; 10for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labours as God did from his. 11Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs.

Minister: This is the word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God!

Sermon Series: Glimpses of Jesus
Sermon Title: True Rest
Speaker: Jared Ayers

Minister:    Let us pray as our Lord Jesus has taught us:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven,
Give us today our daily bread.
 Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever.

 The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts now!

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our saving God
It is right and good, always and everywhere.
To give thanks, to the Lord.

Minister:     Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty to give thanks to you at all times and in all places, O Lord our Creator, almighty and everlasting God! You created heaven with all its hosts and the earth with all its plenty. You have given us life and being, and preserve us by your                 providence. But you have shown us the fullness of your love in sending into the world your Son, Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, made flesh for us and for our salvation. For the precious gift of this mighty Savior who has reconciled us to you we praise and bless you, O God. With your whole Church on earth and with all the company of heaven we worship and adore your glorious name, saying:

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might.
The whole earth is full of Your glory,
        hosanna in the highest!

Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might
The whole earth is full of Your glory,
        hosanna in the highest!

Minister:     Most righteous God, we remember in this Supper the  perfect sacrifice offered once on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ for the sin of the whole world. In the joy of his resurrection and in expectation of his coming again, we offer ourselves to you as holy and living sacrifices.

Minister:    Together we proclaim the mystery of the faith.

Your death, O Christ, we proclaim.
        Your rising celebrate!

Your coming Lord we await, to make all things new.

Minister:     Send your Holy Spirit upon us, we pray, that the bread which we break and the cup which we bless may be to us the communion of the body and blood of Christ. Grant that, being joined together in him, we may attain  to the unity of the faith and grow up in all things into             Christ our Lord. And as this grain has been gathered from many fields into one loaf, and these grapes from many hills into one cup, grant, O Lord, that your whole Church may soon be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

 Praise to the Father,
praise to the Son,
praise to the Spirit,
ur God the Three in One.

Minister:    Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
People:    Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Minister:      The gifts of God for the people of God.

Gluten-free communion wafers are available at the welcome table in the front lobby of the church. Please pick one up prior to coming forward to take communion. Holy Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ.

If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you are unable to receive Communion, we invite you to meditate on one of the following prayers:

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEFLord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT: Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things, we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the LORD our God
We will not be consumed by the flood
Upheld, protected, gathered up

In the dark of night, before the dawn
My soul, be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long?
Oh God of Jacob, be my strength

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed
You are the Faithful one
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom.

People:    Loving God, you have given us a share in the one bread and the one cup and made us one with Christ. Help us to bring your salvation and joy to all the world. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Minister:     Let us pray as our Lord Jesus has taught us:
        Our Father in heaven,
        hallowed be your name,
        your kingdom come,
        your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
        Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
        and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
        now and forever. Amen.

On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan’s fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

All o’er those wide extended plains,
Shines one eternal day;
There God the Son forever reigns,
And scatters night away.

I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for promised land,
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for promised land.

No chilling winds nor poisonous breath
Can reach that healthful shore;
Sickness, sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and feared no more.

When shall I reach that happy place,
And be forever blessed?
When shall I see my Father’s face,
And in His bosom rest?

Minister:    The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

-2 Corinthians 13:13 NRSV

People:     Amen.

Minister:    Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
People:     Thanks be to God!
