August 24, 2014
Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost

Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you!

Leader: In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of
              your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.

People: The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be
              established before you.

Leader: We praise you, Lord, who crowns us with love and compassion, who satisfies our
              desires with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

People: From everlasting to everlasting your love is with those who fear you, O Lord, and your
              righteousness to their children’s children, with those who keep your covenant and
              remember to obey your commandments.

— from Psalm 102-103

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul

It is well, it is well;
through the storm I am held;
It is well, it is well with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul

It is well, it is well;
through the storm I am held;
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well;
God has won, Christ prevailed;
It is well, it is well with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul

It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Our Father everlasting, the all creating One
God Almighty, through Your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son, Jesus our Savior

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

Our Judge and our Defender, suffered and crucified
Forgiveness is in You, descended into darkness
You rose in glorious life, forever seated high

I believe in You
I believe You rose again
I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord

I believe in life eternal
I believe in the virgin birth
I believe in the saints' communion
And in Your holy Church
I believe in the resurrection
When Jesus comes again
For I believe, in the name of Jesus

Leader: No one who conceals transgressions will prosper, but one who confesses and forsakes
              them will obtain mercy.

— Proverbs 28:13

People: Heavenly Father, we confess we dishonor you by our words, thoughts, and deeds.
              Depending on our own strength we stumble; proclaiming our own goodness we sin;
              glorying in our own righteousness we corrupt everything we touch. We turn from you,
              and desire lasting satisfaction from the things of this world. We pray now, forgive us our
              many sins, cleanse the darkness from our lives, turn our faces toward you. In the name
              of your most precious son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Leader: Be strong and do not fear! Your God will come to save you. Then will the eyes of the
              blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a
              deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy...And we, the ransomed of the Lord, will enter
              with singing. Everlasting joy will crown our heads.

— Isaiah 35:1-6

Holy God. Holy and mighty.
Holy immortal One, have mercy, have mercy on us.

Holy God. Holy and mighty.
Holy immortal One, have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Exodus 20:1-2, 17 NRSV

1 Then God spoke all these words: 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;

17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Minister: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God!

Sermon series: Finding Freedom: The 10 Commandments
Sermon title: The Freedom of Contentment
Speaker: Jared Ayers

The Catholic novelist (Flannery O' Connor) believes that you destroy your freedom by sin; the modern reader believes, I think, that you gain it in that way.

- Stephen Prothero, from “Sinning Boldly,” in the July/August 2006
edition of Books & Culture Magazine

Late have I loved you, Beauty so ancient and so new,
late have I loved you!
Lo, you were within,
but I outside, seeking there for you,
and upon the shapely things you have made I rushed headlong,
I, misshapen.
You were with me, but I was not with you.
They half me back far from you,
those things which have no being
were they not in you.
You called, shouted, broke through my deafness;
you flared, blazed, banished my blindness;
you lavished your fragrance, I gasped, and now I pant for you;
I tasted you, and I hunger and thirst;
you touched me, and I burned for your peace.

- St. Augustine of Hippo, from The Confessions

Minister: Let us say what we believe.
People: We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Minister: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

Minister: Lift up your hearts!
People: We lift them up to the Lord!

Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Minister: Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty to give thanks to you at all times and in all places, O Lord our Creator, almighty and everlasting God! You created heaven with all its hosts and the earth with all its plenty. You have given us life and being, and preserve us by your providence. But you have shown us the fullness of your love in sending into the world your Son, Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, made flesh for us and for our salvation. For the precious gift of this mighty Savior who has reconciled us to you we praise and bless you, O God. With your whole Church on earth and with all the company of heaven we worship and adore your glorious name, saying:
People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Minister: Most righteous God, we remember in this Supper the perfect sacrifice offered once on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ for the sin of the whole world. In the joy of his resurrection and in expectation of his coming again, we offer ourselves to you as holy and living sacrifices.

Minister: Together we proclaim the mystery of the faith.

People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Page 11

Minister: Send your Holy Spirit upon us, we pray, that the bread which we break and the cup which we bless may be to us the communion of the body and blood of Christ. Grant that, being joined together in him, we may attain to the unity of the faith and grow up in all things into Christ our Lord. And as this grain has been gathered from many fields into one loaf, and these grapes from many hills into one cup, grant, O Lord, that your whole Church may soon be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Minister: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
People: Therefore let us keep the feast.

Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God.
Gluten-free communion wafers are available at the welcome table in the front lobby of the church. Please pick one up prior to coming forward to take communion.
Holy Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ.

Page 12

If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you are unable to receive Communion, we invite you to meditate on one of the following prayers:

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEF: Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT: Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

You are good, You are good, When there's nothing good in me
You are love, You are love, On display for all to see
You are light, You are light, When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope, You have covered all my sin

 You are peace, You are peace, When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true, Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy, You're the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life, In You death has lost its sting

Oh, I'm running to Your arms,
I'm running to Your arms.
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign

You are more, You are more, Than my words will ever say
You are Lord, You are Lord, All creation will proclaim
You are here, You are here, In Your presence I'm made whole
You are God, You are God, Of all else I'm letting go

My heart will sing
no other Name
Jesus, Jesus

Page 14

People: Lord, you have put gladness in our hearts; you have satisfied our hunger with good
              things. In giving all, you have not withheld from us your own dear Son. How can we
              withhold anything from you, our Lord and our God? Renew us day by day with the gift of
              your Spirit, that we may give ourselves completely to your service and walk with joy in
              the footsteps of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Minister: Let us pray as our Lord Jesus has taught us:
People: Our Father in heaven,
              hallowed be your name,
              your kingdom come,
              your will be done,
              on earth as it is in heaven.
              Give us today our daily bread.
              Forgive us our sins
              as we forgive those who sin against us.
              Save us from the time of trial,
              and deliver us from evil.
              For the kingdom, the power, and
              the glory are yours, now and forever.

This is my Father’s world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings and round me rings
The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world,
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas,
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world
He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass, I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world,
O let me ne’er forget:
That though the wrong seems oft’ so strong,
God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world,
The battle is not done
Jesus who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and heaven be one.

Page 16

Minister: Now may the Lord lift up the light of His countenance upon you, and give you peace in
               your going out and in your coming in; in your sitting down and your rising up; in your
               work and in your play; in your joy and in your sorrow, in your laughter and in your tears:
               until that day comes which is without dawn and without dark.

People: Amen.

Minister:     Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
People:      Thanks be to God!

This fall, there are many opportunities to get connected and more involved at Liberti! There will be several community and mercy events, in addition to ongoing weekly home groups. Click here to learn more about upcoming events and how you can get involved.

A church isn’t simply an event to attend, but a community to belong to. The primary way in which our community connects together is in neighborhood-based groups that meet throughout the week. Home groups are smaller gatherings where you can get to know and be known by others as you develop honest relationships and work out together what it means to follow Jesus. They will resume for the semester the week of 9/7, so now is a great time to sign up. To find a group near you, and to sign up, please click here.

The baby boom at Liberti Church continues! If you are interested in discipling the youngest members of Liberti, we invite you to join us by serving on the meals for newborn families ministry or as a teacher or helper in one of our kids classes once a month on Sunday mornings. For more information or to sign-up, please email Ashley Somers.

At Liberti Church, we call membership being “in covenant,” and the first step of coming in-covenant at Liberti is to attend an in-covenant class. Our next in-covenant class will take place after church on Sunday, September 21. If you have been coming to Liberti for a little while and would like to learn more about our church and our beliefs, we especially invite you to attend. For more information and to sign up, please email our administrator.

Mark your calendars for the evening of Sunday, September 28! We’re throwing a block party for our church and local community to celebrate the purchase and renovation of the First Baptist Building, and you won’t want to miss it!
